I got to chat with Jeannette one of the Co- Founders of https://barskenya.com/ on what it takes to create content especially about the nightlife party scene. She takes us through her most memorable moments as a Lifestyle Blogger. Enjoy the read.

  • Tell us about you and your company:

My name is Jeannette and I’d like to think of myself as a jack of all trades.  Currently, I run a website called BarsKenya.com which, together with 3 of my friends founded it in mid- 2016. What really started as a hobby and pass time, developed into a real passion and interest to breathe life into this concept. Bars Kenya aims to be Kenya’s premier nightlife guide. Our vision is to ensure we keep you close to the Nightlife experience by offering you an extensive database of bars in the country as well as trendy events happening in these nightlife spots. We also do a lot of niche stories behind the bar, ensuring that our readers get updated information about the Kenyan bar scene.

  • Your best social media platform?

Twitter! – I find that there’s a mix of very interesting individuals who share diverse information that is both entertaining and helpful. It is also a real-time platform meaning I can get all the updates I need at a refresh of a button.

  • What do you use social media for mostly?

Stalking! 😀 Just kidding, like most people, my first impulse is usually to check out for the trending stories- obviously, because every second in Kenya is like a Telenovela series. But, on a beneficial basis I use social media to see what people (and also brands) are doing, saying, suggesting and inquiring… so that I can also apply some that valuable info into building a better database for Bars Kenya.

  • What did you study?

I studied Mass Communication and Journalism, but my major focus became Sub-editing. I’ve also done a short course on graphic design as well as photography and production. My current passion is in Digital Marketing.

  • What do you love most about being a lifestyle blogger?

The freedom of expressing one’s opinion- it’s a privilege when you think about it. Getting people to read, comment or give feedback on the things you consider important is truly life changing. Also, who can forget the lovely experiences you encounter on the job? I’ve interviewed very dynamic individuals shaping the industry as well as mind blowing stories of people challenging the status quo. Like once, we featured a bartender here in Nairobi who can make a Martini using blue cheese. Think about that. Cheese and alcohol- ridiculously impressive I can tell you that!

  • What are some of the brands you have worked with?

Under Bars Kenya we have had the pleasure of working with cool brands like Pernod Ricard, EABL, Remy Martin, Hendricks Gin and many more bars that we have profiled on our website.

  • What do you love most about travelling?

New experiences! I absolutely adore getting out of my comfort zone and sampling other cultures and places. If I had the chance I would use the remaining part of my life traveling the world- my dreams are valid!

  • What are your top 5 dream destinations?

This is exciting- and hard to choose. But my top 5 destinations would be

  1. Italy
  2. Maldives
  3. Prague
  4. Rio De Janeiro, Brazil
  5. Machu Picchu, Peru

  • What are some of your hobbies?

I love eating out and sampling new restaurants and joints in town, traveling, catching up on my favorite movies and series- and exploring the nightlife scene (for research purposes *clears throat)

  • What advice would you give young you?

As cliché as this sounds it would be something like- ‘You only live once- so make the best out of it’ don’t be afraid of failure, don’t be afraid to be who you are. Be confident and live your life to the fullest.

  • Kindly tell us your parting shot in regard to both life and work:

In both life and work, always choose something that makes you happy. You’ll love a much fulfilling life.
